Expert available to discuss the Trudeau government’s fall economic statement
Hamilton, ON, December 13, 2024 – The Trudeau government is preparing to release its fall economic statement on Monday. It will provide an updated look at Canada’s fiscal situation and outline economic priorities for the upcoming year.
Colin Mang, assistant professor of economics, is available to provide commentary on the government’s fiscal policies and their implications for the Canadian economy.
“The Finance Minister is likely to report that the government will once again exceed its own deficit target, with projections from the Parliamentary Budget Office indicating the deficit will be about $46 billion,” says Mang.
“Big ticket items like pharmacare, dental care, and free school meals will help a lot of Canadian families. They are good programs in principle, but the government has not yet reckoned with how to pay for it all sustainably. Instead, they keep racking up debt and interest charges. This year our federal government will spend more on interest payments than it does on health care.”
