King Charles III to deliver throne speech May 27

EXPERT ADVISORY: King Charles III to deliver throne speech May 27

Hamilton, ON, May 2, 2025 – King Charles III will open Parliament at the end of the month, delivering the throne speech for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s minority government.

The throne speech is typically delivered by the governor general and outlines the government’s plans and immediate priorities.

The King’s visit comes amid threats to Canada’s sovereignty by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants Canada to become the 51st state.

Justin Vovk, a royal historian at McMaster University, is available to discuss the significance of the visit. Vovk has previously written about how the King has shown his support for Canada since Trump’s election.

He can be reached at vovkj@mcmaster.ca.
