Understand Advocacy Reporting Requirements

Understand advocacy reporting requirements

If you have a priority which you hope to advocate for with the federal government, the Public Affairs team should be contacted to ensure that any meetings are registered in compliance with the Federal Lobbying Act.

The Federal Lobbying Act mandates that:

  • Any pre-arranged contact with a Designated Public Office Holder (DPOH) must be registered if lobbying occurs. This includes phone calls and arranged meetings.
  • Designated Public Office Holders (DPOH) include Ministers, MPs, Senators, ministerial staff, Senate leadership staff, Deputy Ministers, Assistant Deputy Ministers, Associate Deputy Ministers and their equivalents across the federal public service.
  • All meetings that occur within a calendar month must be registered by Public Affairs by the 15th of the following month.

If you have questions or require assistance with regard to any federal advocacy, please contact Alex Lawson at lawsona@mcmaster.ca.
